Signs and Symptoms
For the vast majority of people, gaming is a pleasurable part of their leisure activities, but for a small number of players, problems do arise.
A person's gambling becomes a problem when: 'He or she places his or her own welfare, or the welfare of dependants, at risk through gambling.' Casino Act 1997
Research suggests that there isn't a specific type of person who potentially develops gambling problems.
Signs of a gambling problem can include:
- Feelings of anxiety and stress rather than fun
- Negative impacts on home life created by absence/financial stress
- Feelings of remorse after gambling
- Bills going unpaid
- Getting into debt because of gambling
- The desire to win back losses
- Inability/difficulty to not gamble at every opportunity
- Inability to stop gambling once started
- Using gambling as an escape from worries and problems and other stresses
- Increased alcohol consumption
- Changes in eating or sleeping patterns due to gambling
- Consideration/execution of an illegal act to finance gambling
- Consideration/infliction of self harm after gambling
